The Dinner Hour
I am amazed at how many families, divorced or otherwise have forgotten about the importance of the family meal. Lets look at what this magical time gives you and your family. It is an opportunity to check in with your children about their day. You can start by each member saying something good about their day. Then eveyone can share a challenge. Help your child problem solve. Shut the television and computer and cell phone off during this half hour. Be together. Try to do this every day..checking in and helping your kids process what has happened during their day is important. Its also important to tell them something about your day so that they can see you also face challenges. In this way they learn that you are not perfect, you make mistakes and you problem solve as well. They can see problem solving in action. They will also feel more connected to you and you will be more a part of their daily life away from you.
